# Intuit cuts 17% of staff to accelerate AI

Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi pushed an internal memo to San Diego staff on Wednesday morning, May 20, 2026. The document confirms 3,000 layoffs, roughly 17% of the global workforce. Intuit counted around 18,200 employees as of July 2025. US staff hit by the plan stay on payroll through July 31, 2026, and receive at least 16 weeks of severance, according to [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/20/intuit-to-lay-off-over-3000-employees-to-refocus-on-ai/).

The move would be unremarkable if it came from a struggling vendor. Yet Intuit posted $8.6bn in Q3 FY2026 revenue (up 10% year-on-year) and $4bn in operating income, as detailed by [CFO Dive](https://www.cfodive.com/news/intuit-slash-workforce-layoffs-labor-generativeai/821040/). Q2 net income had already climbed 48% to $693m. The company books $300m to $340m in restructuring charges, mostly in Q4. CEO compensation for FY2025 hit $36.8m, per the proxy statement.

Goodarzi says the cut is meant to *reduce complexity* and *simplify the corporate structure* in order to ship AI-powered products faster. Intuit also confirms expanded partnerships with both OpenAI and Anthropic to push agents into TurboTax (tax prep), QuickBooks (accounting), Mailchimp (marketing) and Credit Karma (personal finance), as reported by [American Bazaar](https://americanbazaaronline.com/2026/05/20/intuit-job-cuts-hit-3000-as-it-expands-ai-across-turbotax-mailchimp-credit-karma-481185/).



## A growth layoff, not a survival one



The framing is unusual. When Salesforce, Amazon or Microsoft trim headcount, the rationale is always financial: margin pressure, post-Covid slowdown, overhiring correction. Intuit prints the opposite. Margins are up, demand is steady, and next quarter is already guided around 10% growth. The plan does not relieve a cost, it funds a reorientation. CFO Sandeep Aujla flagged that most of the savings will flow to the bottom line rather than to a new headcount line.

What management is signalling is that a class of roles becomes structurally less useful once an agent can handle 60% to 70% of the work. In TurboTax support centers, the AI takes the ticket, classifies it, drafts a reply, and routes the edge cases to a tax pro. The human-to-case ratio drops. In QuickBooks teams, agents propose accounting entries while the remaining humans review the trickier files. The marginal cost of each new customer falls. Revenue per employee climbs by default.

The 2024 precedent makes the trajectory clearer. That year, Intuit had already cut 1,800 jobs and immediately redeployed the budget toward AI researchers and ML engineers. The 2026 round runs the same formula at greater scale. You do not lay off to shrink, you lay off to rebalance the skill pyramid. Cisco announced 4,000 departures on the same logic. Meta announced about 8,000. The total tech layoff count for 2026 is past 100,000 positions, per the [CBC](https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/intuit-layoffs-2026-9.7207948). The motive is shifting; the tool stays the same.



## OpenAI plus Anthropic: the end of vendor lock-in



The other detail worth pausing on is the model architecture. Intuit is not signing an exclusive deal, it is stacking frontier providers. The company uses OpenAI for parts of TurboTax, Anthropic for others, and has kept since 2019 what it calls its *generative AI operating system*, a proprietary layer built on its own tax and accounting data. Three tiers: public foundation models on top, fine-tuned models in the middle, internal data underneath.

That stance is becoming the dominant posture among B2B vendors. SAP made Claude the primary reasoning engine of its Autonomous Suite (see [SAP bets on Claude as the brain of its autonomous enterprise](/blog/en/2026-05-18-sap-anthropic-claude-erp-autonome)) while keeping Joule as the orchestrator. PwC rolled Claude out to 300,000 staff but kept doors open with OpenAI. KPMG just joined Anthropic in turn (see [KPMG signs with Anthropic](/blog/en/2026-05-20-kpmg-anthropic-claude-big-four-consulting)). Large enterprises want the freedom to A/B an Anthropic Mythos against an OpenAI GPT-6 without rewriting half their stack.

For Intuit, the bet is also regulatory. US tax law requires strong traceability for any recommendation that affects a tax calculation. With two suppliers, the company can switch overnight if one of them changes its terms or hits a major outage. Diversification, here, is not a marketing posture; it is operational insurance.



## What it means for smaller SaaS vendors



The signal Intuit is sending matters more than the layoffs themselves. When a profitable SaaS vendor, dominant in consumer tax and SMB accounting, removes 17% of staff in six months to reinvest into agents, it sets the bar. Any competitor that does not run the same playbook is now selling a 30% margin against a potential 45% margin at Intuit. Sell-side analysts will adjust their models. Funds will press the next board to do the same.

The midmarket SaaS bracket ($5m to $50m ARR) is following the move with a lag but with the same mechanics. Most European vendors I talk to today still carry a support function that eats 20% to 30% of headcount. With an Anthropic or OpenAI agent properly wired into their knowledge base, that ratio drops to 8% or 10% in under twelve months. The savings are not marginal; they reset the company's profitability threshold.

There is also a hiring side to this story. Intuit is shedding 3,000 roles, but it is not slimming its total comp envelope by anything close to that. The replacement headcount, smaller in number, comes in at much higher salary bands: ML engineers, agent orchestrators, AI security specialists. A single senior researcher in San Francisco can easily cost what three customer-support agents in Reno cost. The optics of a "17% layoff" hide a quieter story: the average comp per Intuit employee is about to climb sharply over the next two years.

This resonates with what I build for some of my freelance clients. On the Fromagerie Ermitage project, I deployed a B2B newsletter automated by n8n that aggregates, scores and summarises competitive intelligence. Before, the marketing team spent two person-days per week on it. The workflow now runs in the background every six hours. The role that used to do this work did not disappear; it shifted to editorial curation and content strategy. Exactly the Intuit logic, scaled down to a French mid-cap.

On the Salesforce side, the 3018 project I run with the e-Enfance non-profit aims to let Agentforce absorb the first tiers of incident triage (Apex, Lightning Web Components, 3CX integration). The agent does not replace the human responder; it gives them back the first twelve minutes of the case. Multiplied by 200,000 calls per year, that comes out to a virtual workforce equivalent to fifteen FTEs. The question Intuit is asking itself today at 18,200 employees is the same question 3018 ops is asking at 80 employees, just at different scale.

## What to watch next



Intuit's bet still needs four quarters to validate. If service quality drops because agents misfire on complex tax cases, the bill will be steep (a single wrong tax calculation exposes the vendor to class-action risk). If customer experience improves and margins follow, the move becomes the reference manual for every Western SaaS vendor by late 2027. Open question: how many software vendors will have the cash and the spine to cut before their competitors force them to?
